Mule Deer Recap with Dustin Wittwer
Show Notes:
Dustin Wittwer is the host of the Finding Backcountry Podcast . Dustin’s also quite the mule deer hunter and grew up chasing them around as a kid. On his podcast, Dustin’s interviewed a ton of qualified hunters, which has helped him put together a roadmap for bettering his own hunting skills. Although he goes after a few elk, sheep, and moose tags, mule deer is Dustin’s sweet spot.
Dustin shares how he approaches his whole mule deer season, starting from the beginning of the year. He looks forward to all the planning and scheming that goes into getting tags and scoring points, and maybe even likes it more than the actual hunting. Dustin starts planning early, and his advice is to identify exactly what you want to go after and try to stay as close to home as possible so you’re able to really understand an area and revisit it.
We get into the best times to kill a high-country mule deer as well as the worst. Dustin also shares his approach to hunting out of state, reverse scouting tips, and a few ways hunters can think outside the box for a more successful hunt.
What’s Inside:
Dustin’s approach to planning for mule deer season
How Dustin plans and tackles out of state hunts
Reverse scouting tips and tricks

Shooting ourselves in the foot
Monday Jul 15, 2024
Monday Jul 15, 2024
Here, I sit down with Charles Whitwam, President of Howl for Wildlife, and we get into all of the latest happenings in the world of hunting advocacy. We kick things off by talking about a giveaway exclusively for Howl members. We’re giving away a fishing trip in Louisiana, offshore and inshore, with the MeatEater crew. If your membership is current as of August 10th, you’re automatically entered.
Charles and I talk about some of the ways the hunting industry shoots ourselves in the foot. With Howl, we don’t want to alienate anyone, and we partner with a ton of organizations, even if they’re competitors of each other. We’re all in this together, and it’s our philosophy to link up and become a stronger force. As long as you’re portraying hunting in a positive light, we want to work with you.
There’s so much bashing within the community, especially around big names and influencers, that it takes away from all the good that’s happening. Charles and I talk about Howl’s mission and how we want to get more people involved. We also chat about some of the anti-hunting legislation that’s bubbling up and what you can do to make a difference.

OTC Tag Changes in Colorado with Henry Ferguson
Show Notes:
Henry Ferguson is a longtime friend of mine and the President of the Colorado Bowhunters Association (CBA). Colorado Parks and Wildlife recently pushed for changes to the OTC tag system, and Henry and I break things down. Archery and bowhunting have become super popular, and there’s a lot of folks out in the woods right now. In a way, we’re victims of our own success.
Along with the CBA, Henry was pretty involved in the recent OTC rule changes. Here, we take a look at some of the pros and cons of the program changes and what it all means for the hunting community. Henry outlines the three options that were laid out on the table, and staying status quo wasn’t going to fly. According to him, they went with the lesser of two evils.
Henry shares what he believes are the benefits of the changes, many of which he says are yet to be seen. I play a bit of a devil’s advocate in our conversation and point out some of the potential pitfalls. Henry also shares some of the cons of the new rules and we talk about the future of hunting in Colorado and other states.

Pros and cons of the changes
What the future of hunting could look like in Colorado and other states

Hunting Success in Every State with Chris Neville
Show Notes:
Chris Neville got his start in the hunting industry working for GOHUNT, where he spent six years after joining right out of college. He recently moved out to Fort Collins, Colorado, and he’s now out on his own doing freelance and consulting work for companies in the hunting space. Chris grew up in Iowa hunting whitetail and as a former eastern hunter, he’s now getting acclimated to how you do things out west.
Chris and I talk about planning hunts in other states where things are unfamiliar. It definitely takes a certain skill set to find success in every state and knowledge is power. You also have to know the state’s rules and regulations and doing as much research as possible gives you a leg up. Chris shares the most important information hunters should retain and we chat about using GOHUNT’s features as helpful tools.
We chat about the differences in scouting in the east compared to the west and how to find the best tag opportunities. The process of getting tags is becoming tougher, but figuring out what you want to get out of a hunt is the best first step.
