Elk season with Jermaine Hodge
Show Notes:
I’m catching up with my friend Jermaine Hodge, and we kick things off by talking about summer hunting plans. I’m headed up to hunt elk in Idaho, and Jermaine is as well. It's a tough country to get into, and Jermaine’s planning a trip with two other world champions—watch out, elk! They’re going in with three tags and 15 days to get it done, so they’re going to go for it. Jermaine’s also going to spend some time hunting late season elk in Colorado.
You can’t guarantee success on a hunt, but it’s all about the experience. Some people look down on those who go out with guides and outfitters, but you don’t realize how much is still in their hands. Jermaine and I talk about the value of going out with a guide. Jermaine also drew a cow moose tag in Colorado, and he’s excited to fill his freezer up. We also talk about some of the expos Jermaine’s looking forward to and the competitions and contests going on there.
Jermaine has a couple of great elk stories, and he shares all the details here. Elk season can be a total grind, and he shares a story from a trip he went on with his wife in 2009. On day one, they both made a kill. At the end of the season, Jermaine’s good friend still had a tag to fill, and he talks about how they got the job done. We also talk about late season hunts and share some stories from those hunts as well.
What’s Inside:
Our summer hunting plans.
The value of hunting with a guide or outfitter.
Jermaine’s elk hunting stories.

High-powered Elk Calling with Beau Brooks
Show Notes:
Two-time world champion Beau Brooks has been staying busy and working hard on his new business, Riven. His company sells top-quality elk instruments, like bugle tubes and mouth calls. Beau grew up on the West Coast hunting in Washington and Oregon and says he’ll shoot whatever walks in, unlike his dad, who’s a big bull hunter. He guides a couple of hunts a year, and archery is his passion. Beau loves to call elk and doesn’t have to let the arrow fly to have a good time.
Beau and I have a conversation about his all-wood bugle tube, which intrigues me. He started out building calls as a teenager and experimenting with materials about six or seven years ago. He tried out several materials, like aluminum, but nothing worked as well as wood. Beau and a friend wound up making a prototype out of maple that didn’t look too great but sounded amazing. It was tough trying to make it all work, but they tweaked the design a bit more until it was perfect. Beau even wound up winning Worlds with it!
I asked Beau some tactical questions, including what he’s going to do differently this year versus last year’s hunts. He’s changing it up by heading to new places, like the Southern Oregon coast, and plans on relying on glassing more than he usually does. We also talk about what Beau does when things are slow, but he knows elk are hanging around. Beau also shares tips on how to change your call techniques when you’re not getting a response and how to handle bulls that bugle but then move around.
What’s Inside:
All about Beau’s new business and his high-quality calls.
How Beau created his all-wood bugle tube.
Elk calling and hunting tips.

Hunting Media, Argentina, and Hunting Lessons Learned with Joe Eppele
Show Notes:
Former pro athlete Joe Eppele joins me here to share some epic hunting stories. He grew up in a logging town up in British Columbia and got into fishing at an early age. As Joe got older, his love of the outdoors took a bit of a backseat when he decided to pursue a football career. He started out at Washington State, then got drafted in the CFL. Once he retired, he became the Director of Business Development and a co-host for Wild TV, which is Canada’s largest hunting and outdoor TV network. Joe and I get into the evolution of the hunting media industry and where it is today.
Joe and I talk about our favorite gear, and we even wear the same boots and pants! We also both got stuck in Argentina right when COVID hit, and we talk about that whole ordeal. Joe also shares a couple of hunting stories, starting with his most memorable. Sheep season’s right around the corner, and last year he had a pretty wild trip in northern BC. One morning, he saw a bunch of young rams, with a couple of legal ones in the mix. It was a day and a half's hike to get in, and he was only with a cameraman. Since it was only the two of them, hauling the ram he got on the way out was a whole process.
Then, Joe shares a story of a hunt that taught him a lot about preparedness in the backcountry. He and his crew went in hard during an elk hunt and had some close calls with some bulls. One day, they woke up early to hike up a faraway mountain. They had planned on it only being a day, but they wound up in a nasty spot. They ate all of their food and drank all of their water to plan for the hike back out, but a bull chirped up, so they decided to wait. Just before last light, Joe gets a perfect shot on him at last light. They contacted their camp, and they showed up with a bottle of whisky. The story gets better from there.
What’s Inside:
How the hunting media industry and social media have changed over the years.
Stories about getting stuck in Argentina over Covid.
Two of Joe’s most memorable hunting stories.

Prepping for Elk Season with Michael Batease
Show Notes:
My buddy Michael Batease is here, and I’m picking his brain on elk hunting. He’s counting down the days until the season, which is right around the corner. I feel like this is the first hunting season that has snuck up on me. Michael got married just a few weeks ago, and now that his focus is off the wedding, he’s prepping for opening day. For the rest of July and August, he’ll be getting his trail cameras out and scouting new areas. Michael lives within a couple of hours from his hunting area, and he often does a quick trip up after work for a glassing session.
Each year, Michael picks a new area to explore, and he’s always looking for backup plans in case one place has too many people or experiences damage. Here, he shares his game plan when he goes into a new area, which starts from home using tools like Fat Map and OnX. He’s also strategic about where he sets up his trailer and base camp. Michael loves night bugling so that’s a big factor in how he chooses a spot, along with a place that has good access for vehicles.
Michael says if there’s a funky horn bull out there, he’ll find it. He loves calling for other people, and everyone he’s called for has at least one bull that’s scored well in the books. I talked to Michael about some of the things he does to tip the odds in his favor early in the year. He also shares why he loves cow and calf calls and some good stories about using calls on the hunt. I ask Michael how to track down a bull who’s far away and what to do if he has cows with him or if he’s alone. He provides tips on how to move in and shares some of the mistakes people make.
Michael has an elk calling academy, and he’s partnered up with Howl for Wildlife. When you become a member of Howl, you’ll get free access to the course included in your membership.
What’s Inside:
Michael’s game plan for going into a new area.
Why Michael loves cow and calf calls.
How to track down a bull that’s far away, with and without cows.

Mule Deer Hunting Stories with Braxton Hamilton
Show Notes:
Braxton Hamilton joins me to talk about mule deer hunting and share some stories. He’s fresh off a bear hunt, and we spend some time talking about bear hunts from the past. Braxton lives in northwestern Wyoming, where I used to go every year for the opener of mule deer. He’s been hunting for as long as he can remember. Braxton’s dad hunted just about everything when it was open, and as a kid, it was really fun. They spent a lot of time in the mountains, and he grew up seeing a lot of huge deer. Back in the 90s and 00s, there were a ton of deer out there.
When he was younger, Braxton had his heart set on killing a giant one and nothing else, and he went a whole 9 years before grabbing one! There are so many lessons in deer hunting, especially when using a bow. We chat about everything that goes into it and how important those moments are when you pull back and draw. Sometimes, it’s as simple as having that killer instinct to go after your target and getting rid of any doubts.
Braxton shares a story about how he shot a 5 x 4 deer back in 2021. He says it was the biggest learning experience he’s ever had in his hunting career. He was out with a partner, and they had been tracking the deer since 2019. We talk about how the majority of mule deer hunting is mental, and sitting in one spot for hours is a whole other grind. They played a bit of a waiting game and wound up losing track of him after shooting him with an arrow. They took a few days off and wound up finding him dead in another camp! It wasn’t a pretty scene, and they think it must have died the night he got him.
What’s Inside:
How Braxton got into hunting and got his first deer.
A mule deer hunting story from Braxton where he played the waiting game.
The mental challenges of deer hunting.
