Title: 2020 Hunting Year in Review with Marlon Holden
Show Notes:
Even though this year provided challenges that were unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, there were still plenty of opportunities to get out there and get into the wild. I talk with Marlon Holden about his 2020 goals to harvest a better age class and animals with more character, and he shares some of his favorite highlights from the 5 archery deer that he bagged.
If you listen to guys who are consistently out in the field, doing a great job, you’ll be able to better understand what stalking should actually look like. I have to remind myself, “If you think you’re going slow, you’re not going slow enough”. A big part of hunting is thinking about what you’re doing and why you need to do it, and then analyzing how you can improve your technique. No one does this better than Marlon, so I hope you listen close to how he analyzes what he’s doing out in the field.
In addition to hunting, Marlon also takes clients out to capture fine art photography. Some of the same techniques that he uses in hunting can be translated over into the work he does capturing landscape vistas and natural settings.
Putting down big mule deer bucks with a longbow is some next level stuff. We debate compound bow versus longbow, and why some hunters decide to challenge themselves by switching between the two. 2020 was wild, but we’re both hopeful that 2021 is going to be a great year with some good hunts planned.
What’s Inside:
What kind of tempo should you bring into a hunt, and how do you figure it out?
Once you become a true student of understanding how you can move and what sounds you can make, then you start to change how you approach a buck.
What can you actually do with a compound bow?

Ranch Fairy Troy Fowler
Show Notes:
This is my second year running guided hunts in South Dakota on land that I lease, and I love it because it’s one of the most magical places to hunt. You can do it all here; you can stand hunt them, call them in, or whatever you want. I’m talking with my good friend Troy Fowler today about bowhunting, including broadhead arrows, and where the best place to take a shot is.
There are some differences between gut shots for both guns and bows, and understanding some basic animal physiology can help you understand what happens when you hit an animal in the gut. Troy explains some of the problems around this shot, and what hunters really need to expect.
If you like an arrow, you can start with that and then fine tune it with the bow. I talk about some of the magical stuff, like twists, that I like to do to my bows to get it to feel right in my hands. A lot of people think that one broadhead shoots like another, but arrows, and especially carbon arrows can be very finicky. Sometimes hunters talk about the weight without the proper perspective. 437 grains are only an ounce, and it’s not really that heavy. But it’s amazing what happens when you start tinkering with the weight.
Broadhead arrows either remain in a static state, or they erode. They don’t get sharper when they hit the bone. Troy thinks you should beef up the broadhead because that’s what hits the animal. On the other hand, I have a different perspective because I’m thinking about flight and drag and everything else. I’ve been experimenting with arrows, and I’m going to share what I’ve discovered about this.
Bows don’t kill deer; arrows do. That means they have to survive the shot. We’re going to share what we’ve found works as far as arrows go, and we’ll also cover some of our techniques for improving on the ready-made designs.
What’s Inside:
The greatest risk of a quartering two shot.
Why I love hunting in South Dakota
How the physiology of the animal will play a part in the hunt.
We discuss in depth our favorite kind of arrows, and why they’re so important in the hunt.

Scoring Coues Deer with Jay Scott
Show Notes:
Even though I know how to score deer, I don’t feel confident telling people how to score Coues deer. So I brought Jay Scott on for an expert’s opinion on how to score them on the hoof.
For the novice or intermediate hunter, Jay recommends that you get as many antlers or horns in your hands as possible with a measuring tape. A lot of scoring just comes down to experience, so you’ll need to look over a lot of deer before you can get a better understanding of what a deer is on sight.
Measuring mistakes can add up quickly. If you’re a half-inch off on everything, then that’ll distort your final number. For hunters who are used to hunting in the East or the Midwest, scoring the Coues deer will be a different experience. When you break down deer, there are 4 main parts of the scorecard.
Point length
Main beam
Mass
Spread
For most people, they talk about spread like it’s the most important factor in scoring, but for Coues deer, it is not. You want to be looking for a minimum length of 15-inches on the points and then everything else builds around that.
You can follow Jay on Instagram for some practice seeing pictures and comparing your guess to his. If you’d like one of his charts that will simplify the scoring process, you can email Jay at: JayScottOutdoors@gmail.com.
What’s Inside:
The difference between Midwestern and Western point language, and why that matters.
For a buck to be a hundred, your point length category needs to be in the 15-inch range.
When beams wrap around the front, the size is going to naturally increase.
How white antlers are going to distort your perception of size.

Best Season to Hunt in Arizona with Eddie Willey
AZ Coues Deer Hunt Breakdown Eddie Willey
Show Notes:
Owner-operator Eddie Willey from Southeastern Arizona Outfitters talks with me about Arizona hunting seasons. The weather always affects a hunt, but so do other factors like the rainy season, the time of year, and even recent fires. For Eddie, a big concern is always making sure that his clients enjoy their hunt, so he shares some tips for how he balances those needs with the challenges of hunting.
While we like spot-and-stalk hunting on the white-tailed side in the early season, it’s pretty restrictive when compared to hunting for mule deer. You’re out hunting out on the barren hillsides, and it’s hard to get eyes on your prey. For both of us, night time cameras are one of our tools to give us a better idea of what’s out there and what their habits are.
Adjusting your strategy whether you’re in rifle season or archery season is a no brainer, but how much should you adjust for the early November season versus the late November season? Eddie and I talk about our favorite hunting seasons, and we compare:
Last week of October, or first rifle season
Early November season, my least favorite hunt
Late November, early December hunt
Rut season
And don’t miss one of Eddie’s most memorable hunts with a client that he shares with me at the end. Don’t ever underestimate the power of hunting to help people connect with nature as they get into the wild.
What’s Inside:
As it gets colder, the deer shift their behavior to get up earlier.
How the does’ choice for habitat will help determine where a buck shows up.
Eddie’s inspiring shoot as a guide with a quadripalegic hunter.
For the most part, Eddie says it’s true that the bigger the buck, the smaller their range.

Title: Late Season Elk Hunting with Clint Hamblin
Show Notes:
Late season elk hunting in Arizona starts the day after Thanksgiving, so for those of you who’ve drawn tags this year, I thought I’d bring on expert elk guide Clint Hamblin. A third generation Arizonan, Clint guides for Steve Chappell, and he has extensive experience across the state.
In these bull hunts, Clint and I talk about what your strategy should be when you’re getting a tag, and what you’re looking for when you’re out in a unit. Even though the late hunts can make it difficult to find elk, once you can establish a herd, you’re going to find some success.
Year to year, you may not find consistency in where a herd likes to hang out. There are always changes in water and food, and even human interaction that will push them off of their regular spots. But there are usually some good indicators to tip you off. Clint prefers burned areas on south facing slopes, places where you can cover a lot of area with binoculars, and finding a way to cover a lot of the country.
As a guide, Clint feels a responsibility to his clients to give them the best hunt of their life because for many of them, it might be the only guided hunt they ever go on. I’ve had that late archery tag three times and tagged out twice. I know how much work it takes to find elk this late in the season, but also how fun and rewarding it is to just to get out there and enjoy some solitude in the wild.
What’s Inside:
How to use wind to help you find deer and elk.
Strategies for finding elk when it’s cold out.
Why I’d take decent binoculars over boots any day out in the field.
